Healing my spirit has come in many forms. Taking control of how I choose to perceive my life, both past and present, has been empowering. How I feel is no longer in the hands of others. It is my responsibility and mine alone. Circumstances and the actions of others may present challenges in my life, but I control how I react to them. Don’t confuse this with “not letting yourself feel.” Feeling is important. It is how you perceive the actions. If you view life through the eyes of a victim, you will always find a threat.
Embracing my past has also been so therapeutic. It is impossible to leave your past behind. You must always carry it with you. Whether it weighs you down or pushes you forward is entirely up to you. I am no longer ashamed of my past. I wear it with pride. I am not ashamed of having anxiety. It doesn’t make me weak. Quite the contrary. It has made me strong.
Forgiveness has freed me. I have forgiven my father. I have forgiven my dad’s mother. They probably had the same afflictions I have. They just didn’t have the same insight, information and experiences that allowed me to overcome it.
I have searched for my purpose in life, to find meaning. It is different for everyone, but I believe there is one common theme. It should involve helping your fellow man. I believe I have found my purpose and this website is a part of it. It seems the directions are given in subtle ways. They are all around you if you look closely and listen carefully.
“The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” ~ Mitch Albom
And who can forget gratitude. I have looked at my life for all that I can be grateful for and have found things in the most unlikely of spots. Now that I see them for what they are, I can’t help but look at current struggles with a different perspective. Though I may not understand now what there is to be grateful for, I have faith that the true blessing will be revealed should I open my eyes to see it.
Third, I healed my spirit. How I perceive the world around me makes a huge difference in how I feel. Embracing the pain I have felt in the past and choosing not to let other peoples actions and emotions reflect on how I perceive myself is essential. It is my decision on how I choose to feel about something. I can let it destroy me or it can help make me stronger. Life focus can also contribute to your feeling of fulfillment. A life unfulfilled often leads to trying to fill it with addictions such as alcohol, drugs, gambling, food, power, possessions, or control.
